Alternative Routes to Degrees from CAO Points for Leaving Certificate Students

Student concentrating on his studies

Portobello Institute offers students an easier route to the course they want.

While we do have entry requirements at Portobello, we do not determine our class sizes or reject students based on CAO points. In our sports department, we also offer an Anatomy & Physiology course that can be used by students who are applying to courses without a base knowledge of human biology.

Our BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy degree is especially popular for students as an alternative route to Physiotherapy.

This course last just three years instead of the standard four-year degrees that other colleges provide. That allows our students to apply for Level 9 master's degrees in Physiotherapy while their peers elsewhere enter the final year of their Level 8 qualifications.

Furthermore, at Portobello, you will benefit from attending smaller classes. Instead of being one face in a crowd of 500 people, your lecturer will know your name and will engage you directly on any challenges you face.

Thomas Maher discovered that first hand:

"I enjoyed my time. I obviously struggled at times, especially in Year 1 because I didn’t know what scientific writing was all about. I was trying to put it in my own words and I suppose it wasn’t too eloquent. But do you know what, I actually enjoy academic writing now.

I used to just give it to the lecturer and say “Tell me straight. What should I do?” and they’d just give me pointers. I’d go away, come back and they’d say “That’s a bit better, you might just have to change that part.”

Aside from our popular Sports Therapy degree, we also offer a BA (Hons) PE degree that opens up opportunities to work with elite athletes as well as a BSc (Hons) Sports & Exercise Science degree that will set you up to work effectively in the evolving area of professional sports.

Portobello Institute offers a wide range of courses at different levels across six departments. You can find our six departments and their respective courses on this page.

CAO points are not the only way to go to college. They are not the only way to earn a degree. Even if you don't get the course you want in September, you can still find a route to where you ultimately want to be in your career.

And if you want to avoid all that incoming stress between now and September, you can secure your place at Portobello right now. Your place will later be confirmed by your transcripts but you will not need to worry about losing it because of supply and demand.
