Ireland’s primary postal service provider An Post recently became the first postal service, globally, to achieve carbon-neutral status in a capital city.
The achievement comes off the back of a company-wide approach to becoming more sustainable. This is a result of its ambition to follow the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, of which there are 17 categories.
An Post has added several green initiatives to its operations in Ireland including the development of its ‘Green Hub,’ a place for customers to improve their energy efficiency. It has also managed to add a considerable number of electric vehicles to its fleet.
And these contributions have led to wider recognition, as An Post took home the award for Excellence in Sustainability, sponsored by Portobello Institute and Berka Solutions, at the most recent Facilities Management Awards.
The FM Awards 2022 took place on Thursday, March 24th in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Golden Lane, Dublin. The annual event is run by event strategies company, BusinessRiver and brings together the leading minds who are driving the facilities management sector forward and celebrates the fantastic achievements and advancements being made by those minds.
Portobello Institute was delighted to be part of the celebrations as a nominee and sponsor. We were nominated for the Best People Development in Facilities Management award, alongside CBRE, LMC FM and Sensori FM.
As a leader of FM education in Ireland, the nomination came as a great honour to all in our FM department. We’d like to take the opportunity to wholeheartedly congratulate CBRE for their victory in the category, with their excellent Mentoring Playbook. We look forward to future involvement in the category.
Portobello was particularly honoured to come on board as an award sponsor for this year’s celebration. In conjunction with Berka Solutions, we were the sponsor for the Excellence in Sustainability award, which went to An Post for their carbon-neutral achievements.
Sustainability is at the forefront of most conversations in the facilities management sector and as the leading educational body in Ireland for FM, it is something that is central to how we teach the FM professionals who decide to fulfil their potential with our qualifications.
We offer general FM courses such as IWFM Level 3 through to Level 5. Additionally, we offer courses with a specific focus on sustainability in the sector. You can read more about IWFM 5 Sustainability & Environmental Issues in FM and our Level 9 PGC in Innovation for Sustainability in the Workplace.
We also ran a series of informative and robust webinars on the topic of sustainability in FM. We welcomed the sharpest minds in the industry from top companies such as Irish Water, CBRE and Arup to name a few. The conversations were engaging and explored the importance of sustainable practices in the FM industry and the need for leadership to be shown from senior figures in order to push the industry forward. You can watch all three webinars on our YouTube channel.
Managing Director of Berka Solutions and Portobello Institute lecturer, Bernard MacOscair, was on hand to present the award for Excellence in Sustainability. Among the hopeful nominees were CIM, a leading company in building analytics, and Gilead Sciences, a research-based biopharmaceutical company. However, the successful candidate for the award was Ireland’s primary postal service provider, An Post, for their contribution to sustainable practice, as mentioned above.

Portobello Institute would like to congratulate An Post and the other nominees for their outstanding work in the field of sustainability this year.
Once more, Portobello would like to re-affirm what a pleasure it was to be involved with the FM awards for 2022. As a leader in education in the industry, it was encouraging to see all the work the companies involved have been doing and continue to do for the advancement of the sector. We look forward to future involvement!
