On March 21st, World Down Syndrome Day 2025, Portobello Institute joins the global community in advocating for greater support systems for individuals with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities.
This year’s theme emphasises a message that is close to our hearts: “Support Systems Matter.”
As we mark this important day, we celebrate not only the capabilities of individuals with Down syndrome but also the vital role that support systems play in helping them thrive. Whether it's education, healthcare, or social inclusion, the right support can unlock potential and lead to a more fulfilling life.
Empowering Inclusive Education at Portobello Institute
In Ireland, Down syndrome affects approximately one in every 444 births, with an estimated 7,000 individuals living with the condition. The journey toward a more inclusive society requires us to not only challenge stereotypes but also ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, has access to the support they need to succeed.
At Portobello Institute, we are committed to empowering inclusive education. We firmly believe that the foundation for achieving equality is through one-to-one support and creating an environment where students are recognised and celebrated for their individual strengths, talents, and potential.
As we celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, it is important to highlight the positive impact support systems have on fostering an inclusive society.
A powerful video which continues to inspire audiences worldwide, emphasises the importance of people with disabilities having a seat at the table where the decisions are made all to way to having a say in everyday personal choices to being involved in writing laws and policies.
We encourage you to watch this heart warming video and join in advocating for meaningful support.
The Importance of Support Systems for Individuals with Down Syndrome
Dr. Marguerita Magennis, Course Coordinator for Early Years and MA in Inclusive Education and SEN at Portobello Institute, stresses the critical importance of support systems in helping individuals with Down syndrome achieve their fullest potential:
"By fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and supports each child's unique strengths and interests, we can create a more equitable and compassionate society. The modules [on the MA course] highlight the importance of building awareness around encouraging everyone to achieve to the best of their ability, rather than assuming that due to a diagnosis one child or young person might not be able to engage," she said.
Portobello Institute’s courses, which focus on inclusive education and special educational needs (SEN), place a strong emphasis on creating robust support systems that cater to the individual needs of students.
Through this, we ensure that students are equipped to navigate educational environments, healthcare services, and social spaces with confidence and inclusion.

Support Systems and the Capabilities Approach
At Portobello Institute, we explore the capabilities-based approach in education, which promotes the well-being and rights of individuals with Down syndrome.
This approach focuses on enhancing individual capabilities and providing opportunities for all to live fulfilling lives.
Dr Magennis explains how this approach works in practice:
"It is through the capabilities approach that we offer a comprehensive framework for supporting wellbeing and inclusion. Unlike traditional welfare approaches that focus solely on providing basic needs, the capabilities approach emphasises enhancing individual capabilities and offering opportunities to all, to lead a fulfilling life.
"For individuals with Down syndrome, this means recognising their unique strengths, abilities and potential, rather than defining them by any limitations they might have. This involves providing access to education, healthcare, employment, opportunities, and social participation, while also addressing the specific challenges they may face in these areas," she said.
The Truth About Support: Social Inclusion
An essential component of any support system is social inclusion - creating communities that celebrate diversity, offer opportunities for interaction, and foster a sense of belonging. Through inclusive practices, we empower individuals with Down syndrome to participate fully in society.
Social inclusion is a fundamental aspect of the capabilities approach. It involves creating inclusive communities that value diversity and provide opportunities for social interaction and cultural participation.
Portobello Institute believes that through one-to-one support and inclusive learning environments, individuals can participate meaningfully in all aspects of life, from education to social settings.
Our commitment to inclusive education ensures that students not only gain the knowledge they need but also the confidence to succeed in a diverse world.
Understanding 2025’s Theme: 'Support Systems Matter'
A support system is the network of people, resources, and services that help individuals navigate challenges and reach their full potential.
For individuals with Down syndrome, a strong support system ensures access to education, healthcare, family support, and an inclusive community that recognises their strengths. Without adequate support, they may face exclusion, underestimation, and isolation.
By recognising the importance of support systems, we can create a society where every individual is valued and empowered.
How Can We Build Stronger Support Systems?

From family members to educators and healthcare professionals, each person who offers support plays a role in helping individuals with Down syndrome thrive.
We also invite you to take action. Let’s work together to build support systems that truly make a difference. Whether it’s advocating for better educational resources, creating more inclusive workplaces, or simply offering kindness and support to those around us, we can all make a positive impact.
World Down Syndrome Day 2025: A Global Movement
World Down Syndrome Day, observed annually on March 21st, serves as an opportunity for the global Down syndrome community to raise awareness, advocate for rights, and promote inclusion.
Since its recognition by the United Nations in 2012, this day has been a powerful platform for driving positive change.
Through the collaborative efforts of organisations such as Down Syndrome International, National Down Syndrome Society, and the Down's Syndrome Association, we can continue to amplify our voices, advocate for inclusive education, and build better support systems for all.
