Facilities Management Faculty FAQs: Your Most Common Questions Answered

Are classes online or in person?

All our courses are delivered 100% online in live recorded sessions. You can fit your studies around your work and personal commitments, and you can pick up the class afterwards if you ever miss one.

How quickly can I gain a qualification? 

The time it takes to gain a qualification depends on your level of experience and the qualification you're pursuing.

For example, our IWFM Level 4 Certificate can be completed in as little as five months. 

If you're looking for a more advanced option, the IWFM Level 5 Diploma takes about eight months to complete.

This diploma also offers advanced entry into Year 3 of our BSc (Hons) Degree in Workplace and Facilities Management, meaning with one further year you would hold a diploma and an honours degree.

How often are your courses?

We run several intakes throughout the year, with the main start dates in February and October for our IWFM, degree, masters and post grad programmes. However, there are usually two or three additional start dates between these periods for IWFM cert and diploma courses, so it's never too early or too late to inquire about your options. 

When are the lectures?

Classes are held either on weekday evenings or at weekends to allow you to fit your studies around your busy work and home commitments. This ability to learn while you earn is a key advantage of our online part-time programmes.

Will I need to attend the college in person? 

No, there are no mandatory onsite days for our facilities management courses. All learning takes place online, giving you the flexibility to study from anywhere. 

How feasible is it to study alongside work and personal commitments? 

Our facilities management programmes are designed with flexibility in mind. They are delivered entirely online, with webinar-based learning that you can access from anywhere. The schedules are tailored to accommodate professionals with demanding jobs and family commitments. Plus, if your work hours are unpredictable, the recorded webinar sessions allow you to catch up at your own convenience. 

This level of support and flexibility means that you can work full-time and manage family life while completing your course. 

Which course would suit me best? 

Here's a quick guide to help you choose the right course: 

• IWFM Level 4 Certificate: Ideal if you have been working in facilities management for some time and you're managing day-to-day operations in-house or outsourced, or if you're hoping to move into such a role within facilities management. 
• IWFM Level 5 Diploma: Best suited for specialist facilities managers working at middle or senior management level, or those responsible for specialised, complex functions. It is also ideal if you aspire to move into these positions. 
• BSc (Hons) in Workplace and Facilities Management: Aimed at those already working in the facilities or workplace management sector, or those in support services looking to develop their skills to degree level and advance their careers. 
• MSc in Workplace and Facilities Management: This programme builds upon your undergraduate studies or workplace experience and aims to develop critical and practical skills in operational management, particularly for a competitive global market.

If you already hold a degree in FM or another discipline our Postgraduate Certificate (PGC) provides a targeted qualification delivered in a shorter timeframe. 

What kind of support can I expect?

I've been out of education for a long time. Will I cope?

This is a question we are asked a lot. Most of our students are mature learners, some of whom have returned to study after a break of several years, or perhaps it’s their first time studying since finishing school or a trade apprenticeship.

Our teaching methods, dedicated support, and collaborative online environment are specifically designed to help you build confidence and succeed.

I want to go for a degree, maybe even a master’s, but I don’t have a college qualification. Is that possible for me?

Absolutely. At Portobello Institute, we passionately believe in access to education for all. We understand that there are non-traditional routes to attaining a degree or higher qualifications, and we will look at Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and work experience to ensure that the course you enrol in is right for you.

It’s important to know that regardless of your academic background, there are pathways to achieving your degree or master's.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

RPL is a process that recognises your existing knowledge and skills, gained from work experience, previous training, or other qualifications, against the learning outcomes of a course. This can allow you to enter a course at an advanced stage, saving you time and money.

How many hours of study per week are required?

This varies from person to person, but as a guide:

• IWFM Level 4 & 5: Approximately 6-10 hours per week.
• BSc Degree: Approximately 12-15 hours per week.
• MSc/PG Certificate: Approximately 15-20 hours per week.
  

These are averages and can vary depending on your prior experience and the assignment schedule.

I'm just starting out in FM. Which course is right for me?

The IWFM Level 4 Certificate is the perfect starting point. It provides a solid foundation in the core principles of FM and is designed for individuals like you who are looking to gain their first formal qualification to complement their new role.

I have a few years of experience but no FM qualifications. Should I start at Level 4?

Many of our students are in this position. The Level 4 Certificate is an excellent way to formally validate your experience, fill any knowledge gaps, and provide a recognised qualification that will help you progress to a future management role. It's the first step on a clear progression pathway.

I'm an experienced facilities manager with no degree. What is my best route?

You have two excellent options:

1. IWFM Level 5 Diploma: This is the industry-standard management qualification. It deepens your strategic knowledge and is perfect if you want a highly respected, practical qualification.
2. Direct entry to the BSc Degree: We can often accept experienced managers directly onto the BSc programme, potentially into Year 3 (the final year), through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. This allows you to "top-up" your experience to a full honours degree in just one year.

I have an IWFM qualification from another institution. Can I progress to a degree with you?

Yes! Holders of an IWFM award are eligible for entry into our BSc programme, allowing you to achieve a full honours degree.

I have a degree (in another subject) and FM experience. Am I eligible for the MSc?

Yes. Our MSc in Workplace & Facilities Management is designed for individuals like you. We welcome applicants with an undergraduate degree and relevant professional experience in FM or a related field.

I am a very experienced FM but don't have a bachelor's degree. Can I still do a Master's?

Yes, in many cases. We strongly believe in professional experience. Applicants without a first degree but with significant, proven senior-level FM experience (typically 5+ years in a management role) are encouraged to apply. Your application will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

What is the difference between the MSc and the Postgraduate Certificate?

The PGCert is a shorter qualification, comprising of the first semester of the full MSc. It's perfect if you want to gain postgraduate-level knowledge without committing to a full master's initially. The credits you earn can almost always be put towards the full MSc later.

How will an MSc benefit an established FM professional?

The MSc moves from operational and tactical management to strategic leadership. It focuses on innovation, complex problem-solving, research, and driving organisational value. It is the qualification for those aiming for Head of FM, Director, or Consultant roles.
