Portobello Institute's FM webinar series on sustainability kicked off with expert speakers discussing the Implementation of Sustainability in FM.
Dermot Walsh (Irish Water), Stuart McIntosh (SIRUS), Ciarán McDonnell (Knight Frank) and Denis Egan (Weston Facilities Services) joined Bernard Mac Oscair to discuss sustainability in FM from a service provider and a client’s perspective.
But what value was delivered at this webinar? What were the key takeaways?
- Sustainability policies can be ambitious but, currently, some of the infrastructure does not support that level of ambition
- Government legislation alone will not change anything, a wider, societal shift in attitudes is needed for progress to be made
- There is too much focus on disincentives, which big companies can absorb, and not enough emphasis on the benefits of sustainable policy and practice
- Companies should be made to feel embarrassed by not taking up sustainable practices and should be made to feel proud when they do
- While sustainable practices still aren’t where they need to be, there is room for optimism that it can be in the near future
