In this blog, Dr. Susan Giblin, Degree Programme Coordinator at Portobello Institute, looks at physiotherapy in modern healthcare, specifically with regard to Cystic Fibrosis (CF).
Physiotherapy plays a vital role in modern healthcare, particularly in managing complex conditions like Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Cystic Fibrosis is a hereditary disorder affecting the exocrine glands. It causes the production of abnormally thick mucus, leading to the blockage of the pancreatic ducts, intestines, and bronchi and often resulting in respiratory infection.
With Ireland recording the highest incidence of CF globally, there is a growing need for physiotherapists who are both highly skilled and equipped to innovate in patient care.
At Portobello Institute, our Health Science faculty is dedicated to preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals to meet these demands through evidence-based practice, cutting-edge research, and compassionate care.
Our MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) program is at the heart of this mission. By integrating advanced clinical training with a deep understanding of current and emerging healthcare challenges, the program prepares graduates to make a meaningful impact in areas like CF care and beyond.
Physiotherapy’s Crucial Role in Cystic Fibrosis Care
Physiotherapy has long been a cornerstone of CF management, focusing on maintaining lung function and reducing infection risks. Traditionally, this involved airway clearance techniques, breathing exercises, and supportive treatments like mucolytics and enzyme therapy.
The advent of CFTR modulator therapies, which target the root cause of CF, has transformed treatment approaches. Physiotherapists now work alongside these therapies, using advanced techniques to optimise lung health and enhance patient quality of life. This evolving role demands physiotherapists who are not only proficient in established practices but also adaptable to advancements in care.
Portobello Institute’s MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) program equips students with these essential skills. Through modules such as Physiotherapy Practice, Human Science in Practice, and Developing Physiotherapy Practice Skills, students gain a comprehensive understanding of person-centered care. Two seven-week clinical placements each year provide hands-on experience, preparing graduates for the challenges of CF management and other complex healthcare needs.
Bridging Clinical Practice and Research
The discovery of the CFTR gene revolutionised CF care, enabling the development of therapies that address the condition at its source. Emerging technologies like CRISPR-Cas9 hold promise for further breakthroughs, such as correcting genetic mutations in the CFTR gene.
This intersection of research and clinical practice is a cornerstone of the MSc Physiotherapy program at Portobello Institute. Modules such as Research Methods in Health Science and the Physiotherapy Dissertation empower students to engage with the latest healthcare research, ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute to future innovations in physiotherapy.
Educating the Healthcare Leaders of Tomorrow
Portobello Institute’s MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration) program is designed to meet the pressing demands of modern healthcare. With a curriculum that combines advanced clinical training, foundational sciences, and research, graduates are equipped to navigate the complexities of healthcare and deliver impactful care.
Whether working with CF patients or addressing broader healthcare needs, our graduates are ready to contribute to Ireland's third-largest employment sector and beyond. Through education that emphasises adaptability, evidence-based care, and innovation, Portobello Institute continues to shape the future of healthcare.
