Portobello Institute Creates Dedicated Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management

After 20 years of guiding professionals through different stages of their facilities management (FM) careers, Portobello Institute has established the Portobello Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management.

This new branch of the Institute serves as a dedicated facilities management education and training hub, bringing together decades of expertise in education, industry partnerships, and professional development under one clear centre of excellence.

Facilities management is a growing profession with an increasingly strategic role in how organisations operate, manage resources, meet sustainability commitments, and plan for the future.

Evolving Irish requirements around energy efficiency and building performance, alongside wider EU decarbonisation requirements, are placing greater responsibilities on FM teams and increasing the need for skilled professionals.

For tradespeople looking to move into facilities management, or professionals at an early stage of their FM careers, the IWFM Level 4 Certificate in Facilities Management and IWFM Level 5 Diploma in Facilities Management provide a strong foundation.

Students gain practical knowledge in areas such as supplier management, compliance, and operational planning, preparing them to take on greater responsibility or progress to undergraduate study.

For experienced FM professionals, the BSc (Hons) Workplace and Facilities Management forms the next stage in that pathway. Designed to be completed alongside full-time work over two years, the degree is ideal for those looking to deepen their expertise and manage people and operations more effectively.

The one-year BSc (Hons) Workplace and Facilities Management (Top-up) also provides a route to an honours degree for eligible professionals who already hold a relevant qualification, as well as those progressing from IWFM Level 5.

At senior level, the pathway continues through the Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and MSc Strategic Facilities Leadership. These programmes are designed for experienced professionals ready to influence organisational performance at a higher level.

Senior Facilities Manager Tadgh Harnedy's experience demonstrates the value of Portobello’s connected pathway across different career stages. He progressed from IWFM Level 5 through to degree and master’s study as his responsibilities evolved.
