After 20 years of guiding professionals through different stages of their facilities management (FM) careers, Portobello Institute has established the Portobello Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management.
This new branch of the Institute serves as a dedicated facilities management education and training hub, bringing together decades of expertise in education, industry partnerships, and professional development under one clear centre of excellence.
Facilities management is a growing profession with an increasingly strategic role in how organisations operate, manage resources, meet sustainability commitments, and plan for the future.
Evolving Irish requirements around energy efficiency and building performance, alongside wider EU decarbonisation requirements, are placing greater responsibilities on FM teams and increasing the need for skilled professionals.
The Portobello Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management supports these priorities through industry-aligned facilities management training and qualifications. The focus is twofold: helping individuals build rewarding careers and enabling organisations to develop capable, future-ready FM teams and leaders.
Industry-Recognised Programmes Backed by Decades of Expertise
Portobello Institute has delivered facilities management programmes for 20 years, backed by more than 45 years of experience in career-focused higher education. Its FM students and graduates work across a wide range of sectors, within leading organisations, and its programmes are delivered by experienced professionals combining academic expertise with current industry practice.
The modern, flexible programmes within the Portobello Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management are designed around working professionals, recognising the knowledge and experience they already bring and building on this to develop deeper expertise, strategic thinking, and leadership capability.
Delivered online, programmes allow students to continue in their roles while they study. Their own workplaces become part of the learning experience, with theory and new knowledge applied directly to real scenarios, projects, and organisational challenges through teaching and assessment. This creates immediate value for both individuals and employers.
The Centre’s programme portfolio is underpinned by recognised professional and academic standards. Certificate and diploma qualifications are accredited by the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM), while BSc, MSc and postgraduate programmes are awarded by University of Essex and recognised for CPD by Engineers Ireland.
Connected Pathways for FM Career Progression
The Portobello Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management offers a clear, connected route from IWFM qualifications through to degree and postgraduate study. Each programme links naturally to the next so professionals can progress through the pathway over time and continue their learning as their careers advance.
For tradespeople looking to move into facilities management, or professionals at an early stage of their FM careers, the IWFM Level 4 Certificate in Facilities Management and IWFM Level 5 Diploma in Facilities Management provide a strong foundation.
Students gain practical knowledge in areas such as supplier management, compliance, and operational planning, preparing them to take on greater responsibility or progress to undergraduate study.
For experienced FM professionals, the BSc (Hons) Workplace and Facilities Management forms the next stage in that pathway. Designed to be completed alongside full-time work over two years, the degree is ideal for those looking to deepen their expertise and manage people and operations more effectively.
The one-year BSc (Hons) Workplace and Facilities Management (Top-up) also provides a route to an honours degree for eligible professionals who already hold a relevant qualification, as well as those progressing from IWFM Level 5.
At senior level, the pathway continues through the Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and MSc Strategic Facilities Leadership. These programmes are designed for experienced professionals ready to influence organisational performance at a higher level.
Learning moves beyond day-to-day operations into areas such as workplace transformation, sustainability, and ESG. Postgraduate students tackle complex FM challenges and apply evidence-based solutions with tangible organisational impact.
FM Graduate Career Success
Portobello graduate Andrew Fay applied what he learned during his master’s studies directly to his role as Facilities Manager at CSC Global, supporting ESG reporting, environmental disclosure, energy and waste reduction initiatives, and strategic workplace planning.
Andrew explained: “Studying at this stage of my career allowed me to step back, critically evaluate my work, and strengthen my ability to influence decision-making at a higher level.
“It was both a personal and professional investment to align my experience with emerging global standards in workplace and facilities management.”
Senior Facilities Manager Tadgh Harnedy's experience demonstrates the value of Portobello’s connected pathway across different career stages. He progressed from IWFM Level 5 through to degree and master’s study as his responsibilities evolved.
“For me, it’s about making a positive impact in the field and creating long-term change, and studying at Portobello has been the pathway to turn that passion into expertise,” said Tadgh.
Training Shaped Around Organisational Needs
The Portobello Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management works with employers looking to build stronger progression routes within their FM teams, helping them grow leadership capability from within, retain high-potential employees, and reduce reliance on external recruitment.
The aim is not only to strengthen technical capability, but to help organisations prepare professionals to think critically, lead change, and make informed, evidence-based decisions.
Alongside recognised qualifications for individual high-potential employees, the Centre can create bespoke and group training around wider workforce priorities.
Training can be delivered online or on-site and tailored around an organisation’s own policies, procedures, and workplace scenarios.
Options range from leadership development and sustainability to operational performance and workplace management. CPD workshops, masterclasses, and wider team development programmes are also available.
A Platform for the Facilities Management Community
The Portobello Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management’s new website features programme information, professional pathways, employer perspectives, career stories, and expert insight from across the sector.
The FM News & Insights hub will explore developments shaping the profession, giving industry voices a platform to share knowledge and keep the wider FM community informed and connected.
This industry connection helps align Portobello’s education with the realities of modern FM. Relationships with employers, professional bodies, and initiatives such as the Facilities Management Awards provide ongoing insight into the industry's changing needs.
A Long-Term Commitment to Facilities Management
The Portobello Centre for Sustainable Facilities Management marks the next stage in Portobello Institute’s long-standing relationship with the FM sector.
Gerry Kelly, Programme Lead for Facilities Management at Portobello Institute, said: “People are the lifeblood of facilities management – we see that every day through the professionals studying with us.
“Most are already working in the sector and bring valuable professional experience into lectures and discussions. Our role is to help them build on that experience, question established practice, and develop the confidence and capability to respond to change, manage complexity, and make informed decisions.
“Learning goes both ways. Students bring real workplace examples and challenges into class, learn from each other’s experiences and perspectives, and take new thinking straight back into their organisations.”
