Portobello Institute has announced University of Essex as the new awarding body partner for its facilities management (FM) programmes, further strengthening its position as a leading provider of FM higher education in Ireland.
The partnership supports the institute’s delivery of flexible, professionally aligned pathways for individuals at every stage of their facilities management careers.
Uniting University of Essex’s academic expertise with Portobello Institute’s specialist FM experience, this collaboration introduces newly developed undergraduate and postgraduate programmes shaped by a shared commitment to high-quality, industry-focused education.
Partnering with University of Essex
Based in Colchester in the UK, University of Essex is a public university established in 1965. Over the past 60 years, it has built a strong reputation for academic excellence, research quality, and international engagement.
University of Essex is ranked:

The university also reports that 86% of its graduates are in employment or further study, according to HESA Graduate Outcomes 2025 data.

Portobello Institute’s Facilities Management Pathways
Portobello Institute has strengthened its facilities management offering with updated programme content and qualifications awarded by University of Essex, providing a clear progression pathway from undergraduate study through to a Master's degree.
As Portobello Institute’s educational partner and validating body for FM, University of Essex has approved the programmes for delivery and awards the qualifications upon successful completion.
The undergraduate and postgraduate facilities management programmes were previously awarded by London Metropolitan University.
A full honours degree for professionals working in facilities management, workplace management, or related sectors, designed to build on existing industry experience. Advanced entry routes are available, with holders of an IWFM Level 4 qualification eligible for entry to Year 2.
A final-year facilities management degree pathway for learners who hold an IWFM Level 5 qualification or equivalent prior learning, enabling them to achieve a full honours degree.

A postgraduate entry point for facilities and workplace management professionals, providing strategic FM knowledge, analytical capability, and practical skills that can be applied immediately in the workplace. Successful completion provides progression to the Postgraduate Diploma and MSc.
