Before starting placement, students on certain programmes must complete up-to-date Garda Vetting, which is conducted through Portobello Institute.
Carried out by the National Vetting Bureau of An Garda Síochána, Garda Vetting is a legal requirement for anyone undertaking work or activities involving children or vulnerable adults.
This includes a wide range of health science, sports, early years, and special needs assisting-related settings, including hospitals, clinics, care homes, community services, therapy environments, schools, and sports organisations.
Why Garda Vetting Is Required
Garda Vetting helps ensure that students are suitable to undertake placement in settings where they may be working with children, vulnerable adults, or other members of the public who require care, support, or supervision.
Vetting checks whether an individual has a criminal record or any relevant information that may need to be considered before they begin placement.
The Garda Vetting Process
The process is straightforward, and Portobello Institute will guide students through each stage. The typical steps are:
- During onsite induction, students complete a Garda Vetting Invitation Form, issued by Portobello Institute, and provide the required photo identification and proof of address
- Portobello validates the details and submits the information to the National Vetting Bureau
- Students receive an email link to complete the online vetting application, which must be completed within 30 days
- Once submitted, the application is reviewed and forwarded to the National Vetting Bureau for processing
- When complete, a vetting disclosure is issued to Portobello Institute, and a copy is made available to the student and work placement settings if required
The Garda Vetting process typically takes a up to a few weeks and must be finalised before students can attend programme placements.
It is your responsibility, as a student, to ensure Garda Vetting is completed before placement. Portobello Institute will support you throughout each stage, but it is important to follow the required steps as soon as they are shared.
If you are unable to attend your onsite induction for any reason, arrangements will need to be made for you to carry out the required onsite vetting steps on another date.
