Education in Facilities Management: Insights from Sodexo’s Global Technical Director

30 Aug 2024

On August 28th, 2024, Portobello Institute had the privilege of hosting Liam O'Connell, Sodexo's Global Technical Director, at our webinar titled “A Data-Driven Approach To Energy & Asset Management.”

Liam shared invaluable perspectives on the evolution of Facilities Management (FM) and the pivotal role education and professional qualifications play in advancing the industry. Here are some of the key takeaways from his insightful discussion.

The Evolution of Facilities Management

Facilities Management has evolved significantly over the years, reflecting the growing recognition of its vital role in organizations. Liam reflected on past perceptions of FM professionals, illustrating how far the industry has advanced:

“They used to talk about the FM [Facilities Managers] as the receptionists with the key to the cupboard. Stationery is largely disappearing now [laughs], but that was the level that people considered facilities managers to be at.”

In earlier times, FM roles were often underestimated, seen primarily as administrative positions. However, the dedication and expertise of FM professionals laid the groundwork for the strategic and integral functions that define the industry today. Their efforts were instrumental in shaping the modern view of FM as a crucial component of organisational success.

The Shift Towards Professionalisation

Liam emphasised the lack of formal education pathways in FM, which previously hindered the profession’s growth:

“There wasn't a real profession around it, and it wasn't something you could study directly and move into an industry. It was more you do something else such as a business course, or an engineering course or whatever it might be, and then somehow you found yourself working for a business like a Sodexo or a CBRE or one of them, and then you'd move into a broader FM [Facilities Management] field, and then you sort of become Facilities Management. It wasn't directed and it wasn't professional…”

This ad-hoc approach to entering the FM industry meant that many professionals entered the field without a clear pathway or standardised training, relying instead on experience and on-the-job learning.

The Importance of Professional Qualifications

The turning point, according to Liam, is the introduction and emphasis on professional qualifications:

“…and now to have a true professional qualification behind you, it's just going to push the industry forward. I think institutes such as yours [Portobello Institute] and the IWFM [Institute Workplace & Facilities Management] are driving the industry forward.”

Institutions like Portobello Institute are crucial in formalising FM education, providing structured learning programs that equip professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field. These qualifications not only enhance individual career prospects but also elevate the entire industry by fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.

Learning from the Past to Innovate for the Future

Liam also touched on the value of learning from previous experiences to avoid past mistakes and encourage innovation:

“Young people or old people coming into the industry, if they have what's gone by before they don't have to learn it through the industry and they don't have to make the same mistakes that we made. They can also bring real innovation and ideas to what we're doing.

"I'm a bit of a dinosaur now! I base my ideas on slightly older technologies although I have experience, I think the innovation piece will come from institutes like yourselves [Portobello Institute], how we deal with the future and how we deal with facilities the more efficient way of doing things and really bringing the profession to the fore and having it recognised properly.”

By integrating historical insights with modern educational frameworks, new FM professionals can drive innovation, implement efficient practices, and ensure that Facilities Management remains a dynamic and respected profession.
