Is Blended or In-Person Study Best for Your MSc Dietetics (Pre-registration)?

For many people considering dietetics at master’s level, finding a learning experience that fits around your life is often a priority. You may already know where you want your career to go but need a study format that works alongside the commitments that matter to you.

With Portobello Institute’s MSc Dietetics (Pre-registration), you can choose between blended and in-person study, and follow the format that best supports your journey towards becoming a dietitian.

The academic content and practical placements are the same across both two-year delivery formats. What differs is how teaching is scheduled and how often you are on campus.

Whichever study format suits you, you’ll be working towards a career that can make a real difference to people’s health, at a time when qualified dietitians are needed across healthcare.

Blended or In-Person: Which Is Right for You?

Blended learning gives you more flexibility to shape study around your life, with evening online classes supported by scheduled weekend teaching at Portobello Institute in Dublin city centre.

In-person learning, on the other hand, offers a traditional weekday on-campus routine and regular opportunities to connect with tutors and classmates face-to-face.

For both delivery modes, you'll study the same curriculum, complete the same clinical placements, and graduate with the same qualification.

The real difference lies in the learning environment and how teaching fits around your week. Everyone’s circumstances and learning preferences are different, so the right choice is the one that helps you get the most from your master’s degree.

Ireland's Only Blended MSc Dietetics (Pre-registration) Pathway

Portobello Institute is understood to be the only higher education provider in Ireland currently offering a blended pre-registration route in dietetics.

The decision to introduce this new blended learning option was made by Programme Lead Dr Roberta Mendes, RD, PhD and the wider Portobello team. The aim: to create a more flexible pathway into the dietetics profession – one that more people could see themselves taking.

“At the moment, no other dietetics programme in Ireland offers this type of blended pre-registration route,” explains Roberta, a CORU-registered dietitian with over 25 years’ professional experience.

“What Portobello Institute is doing is very forward-thinking and opens up the profession to people who might otherwise not have the opportunity to study.”

What Are the Benefits of Blended Learning?

Blended learning offers a flexible way to study dietetics while balancing employment and other commitments on your path to becoming a dietitian.

“I think the blended delivery option will be a huge benefit for students who want to continue working while they study,” says Roberta. “It gives them greater flexibility to balance their studies with work and personal commitments.”

Fewer trips to campus can also make study easier to manage, without losing the benefits of in-person teaching.

She explains: “While much of the teaching is delivered online, there are also on-campus weekend sessions, which are really valuable for developing practical skills and maintaining that face-to-face connection with tutors and classmates.”

Blended learning offers flexibility, but it requires the same academic focus and professional commitment as in-person study. You will still need to manage scheduled teaching, independent study, practical work, and placements.

What Are the Benefits of In-Person Delivery?

In-person study may suit you if you're looking for a traditional campus experience while completing your MSc Dietetics (Pre-registration).

“Students who choose the in-person delivery option benefit from more face-to-face teaching and greater day-to-day contact with tutors,” says Roberta.

That added contact can make it easier to ask questions as they arise, receive immediate support, and build strong working relationships with classmates.

In-person students have additional scheduled contact during the week. This can be particularly valuable when developing practical and professional skills such as patient assessment, communication, and consultation.

“That regular interaction creates a strong sense of community and encourages collaboration throughout the programme,” Roberta adds.

What Do Both Delivery Options Include?

Both delivery formats use a mix of learning methods, including:

  • Lectures, seminars, and tutorials
  • Practical classes and workshops
  • Problem-based learning
  • Guided independent study
  • Project supervision
  • Practical work experience
  • At least 1,000 hours of dietetics placements across Years 1 and 2
The Placement Commitment Is the Same

Choosing blended learning changes how the taught elements are scheduled, but it does not reduce the placement hours, practical experience, or professional expectations of the programme.

“The clinical placements are exactly the same as the full-time delivery, and that’s something students need to be aware of,” Roberta explains. “However, the flexibility of the blended format can make it easier to plan placements alongside work.”

Students who continue working may need to use annual leave, reduce their hours, or agree another arrangement with their employer during placement periods.

Before choosing either format, consider how placement periods will fit alongside your work and personal life.
