As we gear up to kick-off of our initial MSc Physiotherapy cohort, we have been speaking with some members of the class!
First up is Elaine McKeon, who was led to joining the programme by a passion for working with kids. Elaine plans to specialise in sports therapy and paediatrics with a view to eventually opening up her own physiotherapy practice.
- What motivated you to choose physiotherapy as a career, and why did you decide to enroll in the MSc Physiotherapy program at Portobello Institute?
"My motivation to choose physiotherapy as a career, stems from a deep-seated desire to help others improve their quality of life, combined with a fascination for human anatomy and physiology. I have always been enthusiastic about understanding how the body works, heals, and responds to treatment, and physiotherapy offers a dynamic and engaging way to apply this knowledge. The opportunity to make a tangible difference in patients' lives by aiding their recovery from injuries, managing chronic conditions, and enhancing physical functionality is incredibly fulfilling.

- What are you most excited to learn or experience during your time in the MSc Physiotherapy program?
"My principal areas of interest for exploration in the Portobello Institute's MSc Physiotherapy program include advanced clinical techniques and innovative research approaches. Obtaining practical experience through clinical assignments is especially exciting to me as it will enable me to use my academic knowledge in real-world situations and enhance my practical skills.
"I also look forward to delving into more specialised areas of physiotherapy, such neurological rehabilitation and sports therapy, as these will expand my knowledge and provide me with a variety of job options. Another thing that excites me is the chance to collaborate with colleagues and contribute to innovative research initiatives; this will put me at the forefront of the field's achievements and allow me to meaningfully impact the healthcare community."
- How do you think being part of the inaugural class will shape your educational experience and future career in physiotherapy?
"Being in the first class of the Portobello Institute's MSc Physiotherapy program will have a significant impact on my academic journey and future physiotherapy career. Because of this exceptional chance, I will have a firsthand role in the program's development and improvement, offering suggestions and assisting in establishing high standards for upcoming cohorts.

- What are your career goals after completing the MSc Physiotherapy program, and how do you believe this program will help you achieve them?
"My main career objectives are to specialise in sports therapy and paediatrics after completing the MSc in Physiotherapy degree, and to eventually open my own physiotherapy practice. With the use of state-of-the-art therapeutic methods and individualised treatment plans, I hope to assist athletes in recovering from injuries, improving their performance, and avoiding new ones. In addition, I am passionate about working with kids to meet their specific developmental and rehabilitative requirements and make sure they get the finest treatment possible.
"The Portobello Institute curriculum will play a crucial role in helping me accomplish these objectives by giving me a thorough education that includes both academic knowledge and practical skills.
