Getting a degree in physical education and/or coaching typically means developing a skill set that is designed to fill a specific role. Many of Portobello Institute's graduates have gone on to successfully fill those roles in the sports industry, fitness industry or as a PE teacher in education.
But the benefits of a degree in physical education and/or coaching are far more wide-reaching than that.
Portobello Institute offers a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Physical Education degree and a BSc (Hons) Sports Psychology, Coaching and PE degree that both fit that description.
Coaches tend to be inspirational figures who don’t fear standing out from the crowd. Those who are natural born leaders do it from their early days. If they’re the captain of their sports team as a 10-year-old, they don’t fear the opportunity. They know how to give a speech and engage with people.
Not all successful coaches are natural born leaders. Gareth Southgate was never really considered that type of figure when he was a player. He wasn’t even considered it when he started coaching until the England manager’s job was dropped onto him suddenly.
Southgate developed his style and his confidence on the job after receiving his training.
The England football team benefited massively from his personal and professional development.
Developing into a leader through an education in coaching is something that you can do. You might be uncomfortable speaking in front a group of people or structuring a session to engage a group right now, but once you go through the proper training it will become something you can do as second nature.
At Portobello, we have a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Physical Education degree and a BSc (Hons) Sports Psychology, Coaching and PE degree that will instill a similar command of coaching in you.
The Institute of Coaching, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, has outlined the benefits of coaching in areas outside of sports.
According to their findings, numerous clients reported that coaching positively impacted their careers as well as their lives by helping them to:
- Establish and take action towards achieving goals
- Become more self-reliant
- Gain more job and life satisfaction
- Contribute more effectively to the team and the organization
- Take greater responsibility and accountability for actions and commitments
- Work more easily and productively with others
- Communicate more effectively
80% of people who received coaching reported increased self-confidence and over 70% benefit from improved work performance, relationships and more effective communication skills. 86% of companies reported that they recouped their investment on coaching and more.
If companies are recognizing and seeking out the benefits of coaching, they will also be seeking out qualified coaches to implement that coaching.
Workplace coaches are responsible for empowering employees to be the best version of themselves at work. According to SafetyCulture, a workplace coach can provide value by carrying out these specific responsibilities:,
- Develop the right mindset and perspective
- Cultivate the optimum environment for professional growth
- Uncover specific areas of improvement in knowledge, skill and performance
- Evaluate an employee’s readiness to be coached
- Apply appropriate coaching styles and techniques
Coaching is a skill set that when learned correctly can be taken and applied to another setting or situation. If you understand how to teach people and how to evaluate the best way in which people learn, then you can adjust to their needs based on their job requirements or personal fit in the wider team.
Attaining a degree that immediately opens doors in sports as a professional and sets you up to develop your leadership abilities personally will give you the confidence to build the career you prefer.
Portobello Institute values the one in everyone and understands that education is only a part of your life. We don’t want to take up all of your time and create stress for you. You should go to college to improve your life outside of college and after college.
We are training the sports professionals of the future. If you would like to work in sport in a professional capacity, you can find a course that will provide you with the requisite education to do so.
